CLOSED – WIN one of five “How To Keep Safe …in a sometimes scary world”

How To Keep Safe In A Sometimes Scary World Front Cover

Even though anxiety is the most common mental disorder in children, often they keep the source of the problem to themselves and continue to worry.  How To Keep Safe…is a book for 4-9- year olds and their teachers/parents to share. Written by teacher, blogger, and parenting expert Jo FitzGerald, it’s a gentle, illustrated rhyming story of a boy (Cal), a dog (Pal) and his family. Together, they talk about what to do in case of getting lost, being in a home fire, or getting caught up in a dangerous event. The family makes plans around keeping safe, knowing that bad things will probably never, ever happen. But just in case – they’ll know what to do. The book helps ease worry and anxiety in children and opens difficult conversations between teacher/parent and child over potential dangers and their feelings connected with this. Also included is an extensive discussion guide with suggested teachers/questions parents can ask, how to talk about feelings and ideas for making plans and rules together. A scheme of work and pupil workbooks are also available for class use. Tiny Sponges produces a range of education support materials, with a focus on safeguarding and mental health. CLOSED – Teach school children the importance of handwashing (competition)

A Germ's Journey poster on wall

A book created to actually show young school children the bacteria which lurks on their hands is helping to visually reinforce the important hygiene message of handwashing. The book, A Germ’s Journey, is the brainchild of microbiologist Dr Katie Laird and education expert Dr Sarah Younie of De Montfort University Leicester (DMU). As parents themselves they knew the importanceof handwashing in preventing disease and communicating it at a young age.   Aimed at children aged three to five, A Germ’s Journeyincludes illustrations which feature special thermochromic black paint. Once the child’s hand is placed upon the paint, the microbes present appear on the hands in the book and the black paint vanishes.   Dr Laird, Head of DMU’s Infectious Disease Research Group, said the idea was to introduce the concept of the ‘invisible germ’ to youngsters. She said: “Often children cannot understand that there are germs on their hands because they cannot see them. “Working through the book they can see the germs appear and it allows teachers, parents and carers to have the conversation around handwashing. It also demonstrates clean hands after washing hands.  At the back of the book is information for teachers on how to interact with the book and teach pupils about germs.” The project was funded by the Society of Applied Microbiology and the book has now been taken on by Medina Publishing Ltd, while a website with games, downloads and tips for parents and teachers has been created too. All of the educational resources are free at the point of access.   Copies of the book have been distributed to preschools and nurseries, toddler stay and play groups and internationally, via a charity in Kenya, and Dr Laird and Dr Younie have also partnered with teachers in India and Sierra Leone to co-create culturally relevant books for their regions. Most recently, they teamed up with Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum to provide educational resources that teach children the importance of handwashing. A Germ’s Journey forms part of the museum’s new MiniBrum gallery; a child-sized world designed for youngsters to explore their understanding of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) through different role-play zones.   Working with the DMU researchers, the Thinktank team co-ordinated and organised the creation of a handwashing song with children from Benson Community School in Birmingham and musicians from Bridge Arts and Music that will be played in the MiniBrum toilets for children to join in with.   The museum will also incorporate A Germ’s Journey games and activities throughout the exhibition and offer health hygiene workshops for schoolchildren as part of its educational programme.   Win a copy of A Germ’s Journey to share with your class We have 5 copies up for grabs of A Germ’s Journey! To be in with a chance of winning a copy to share with your pupils all you need to do is answer this simple question.   What does handwashing prevent? Age of Revolution launches animation competition

Dan Snow will judge the history animation competition

The Age of Revolution national educational project has teamed up with historian, broadcaster and author Dan Snow to launch an animation competition for primary and secondary schools. Open to entries until February 14th 2020, the Age of Revolution invites schools to submit a short animation using the title ‘What Does Revolution Mean to Me?’ The animation can be influenced by a revolutionary invention, event, idea or person from the Age of Revolution (1775 – 1848), however, it could also be something revolutionary from another time, inspiration from students’ local history or in their own lives or wider world today. The Age of Revolution also encourages schools to involve objects and artworks from museums, galleries or archives in their animations. This could be achieved through our extensive online Revolutionary collection. A winner and a runner-up for both Primary and Secondary sectors will be chosen in March 2020 by a team of expert judges, including Dan Snow, award-winning Casting Director Kate Rhodes-James, BBC Animation Producer Barry Quinn and Anra Kennedy, Partnerships Director at Culture24.  The judges are looking for imaginative, creative animations, which genuinely reflect students’ own ideas and thoughts about ‘Revolution.’  Animation prize for winning schools  Winners will be announced at the end of March 2020. The winning entries will be showcased on History Hit TV. The winning schools will also receive £500 to support further cultural and digital learning. The Age of Revolution project aims to inspire and support learning in schools about the extraordinary people, events and ideas of the time and to connect these to the lives of children and young people today, working actively with more than 2,000 UK schools. The project provides bespoke educational materials, multimedia technology and educational and cultural partnerships for children at all Key Stages. Victoria Nielson, CEO for Waterloo 200 says: “The revolution in Europe saw seismic change and upheaval, extraordinary ideas and innovation and radical new ways of thinking, living and working. By asking schools to think about the period in a new way – through the lens of a modern medium like animation – we hope to inspire a new generation of teaching and learning about this important piece of history. Ultimately, we are looking to create a broad and varied collection of learning resources and inspirational work, created from and by, children.” Dan Snow, historian and ambassador for Waterloo 200 added: “We know that children can make some amazing observations, and this competition will allow us all to see an important period of history through a new lens. We’re looking forward to finding out how they see revolution, and how key moments in history are impacting on their lives today. This competition will encourage children, who may have never really thought about revolution before, to talk about it, to appreciate it and to learn from it.”  Schools can find out more about the competition and how to enter at The Age of Revolution website. And, to provide food for thought, The Age of Revolution has worked with a primary school to produce an inspirational animation, which showcases what can be created in the classroom. For further information on the animation competition visit www.ageofrevolution.org The Age of Revolution resource brings together objects and artworks from museums and galleries across the UK, together with fascinating facts, information and curriculum-linked ideas to help bring this extraordinary period to life. The Age of Revolution is an educational legacy project from Waterloo 200 – the official body recognised by the UK government to support the commemoration of the Battle of Waterloo during its bicentenary in 2015 and beyond.

CLOSED – Win a collection of 100 ideas books from Bloomsbury books worth £53

100 ideas books from Bloomsbury books

Bloomsbury Books is a leading independent publishing house established in 1986. It has companies in London, New York, Sydney, and New Delhi. Its four divisions include Bloomsbury Academic and Professional, Bloomsbury Content Services, Bloomsbury Adult Publishing, and Bloomsbury Children’s Publishing. They are now hosting a competition for teachers to win: 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: History – £13.49 Teaching history without reference to genuine historical sources from the relevant period is unimaginable, as engaging with real historical material can inspire and captivate pupils’ interest. By introducing them to a source-based approach, their learning can be transformed and their historical skills developed. 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: History is brimming with imaginative ideas to teach history in the primary classroom. With each idea based on an original historical source from The National Archives, this book takes a skills-based approach that will not only help pupils understand the methods of historical enquiry, which is a key aim of the National Curriculum, but also make history real, captivating and exciting. Themed to cover different source types, including photographs, government reports, cartoons, royal seals, manuscripts, and private and official letters, this book is ideal for building a picture of the past. The historical sources can be previewed in the book and downloaded from a companion website, allowing them to be integrated into teaching tools. 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: Questioning – £13.49  Questioning is key to effective teaching and learning, yet practical questioning strategies that are immediately useable in the classroom can be hard to come by. 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: Questioning presents practical strategies, games and activities not only to help teachers improve their own questioning in the classroom but also to allow pupils to develop an understanding of how they too can ask effective questions to develop their learning. Using philosophical approaches including ownership, authenticity, balance and Socratic principles, Peter Worley, co-founder of The Philosophy Foundation, provides guidance and ideas on how questioning can help pupils reach the next step and activate their own thinking. He also encourages teachers to reflect on their practice and the effect of questioning on children’s progress. The ideas in this book are applicable to all subjects in a primary teacher’s curriculum and are ideal for establishing good questioning strategies and a solid understanding of this core element of teaching. 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: Engaging Parents – £13.49 Parental engagement with children’s learning is the best lever we have to raise achievement in schools. However, there is a gap between what is known from the research and actual practice at the chalkface in schools. Parents are still often seen as ‘helping’ the school, rather than having a direct role in their children’s learning. Bringing together one of the main researchers in the field and an educational consultant, this book utilises their experience to present 100 evidence-based ideas to help primary teachers engage parents in their children’s learning. 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: Engaging Parents presents ideas for supporting the most effective forms of parental engagement, which are grounded in both the literature in the field and practical experience of working with schools and families. This book offers a clear, concise and easy-to-use format that takes into account how busy schools and teachers truly are! 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: Coding – £13.49 Coding comprises half of the National Curriculum strands for computing, and 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: Coding is packed with resources that will give every teacher the confidence to deliver it. The easy-to-follow and practical activities in this book will be invaluable for all teachers, whether they are new to coding and just getting to grips with the basics, or are more experienced and wish to expand their repertoire.  All the ideas have been carefully selected and written to be appropriate for the widest range of pupils’ ages and abilities, and to be used with most coding platforms and devices – making them compatible with any existing scheme. Readers can also access and download additional free resources and templates online – 100 ideas is just the start! Review – “Martin Burrett never fails to amaze – on Twitter, at a TeachMeet, with #UKEdChat and, in this case, in his books. He knows computers, he knows primary education and he knows how to engage pupils in their learning! This book covers all aspects of primary coding that teachers need in the classroom.” –  Liam Murphy, Junior School Assistant Head, @ThisIsLiamM, For more information about Bloomsbury Books please click here To enter this competition please click on the Rafflecopter competition below: a Rafflecopter giveaway *The administrator of this competition is QA Education Magazine (“administrator”). The judges are looking for an edtech solution aimed at servicing early years to secondary education that addresses one or more of the following three challenges for technology identified by Damian Hinds, Secretary of State Education, in August 2018: ·         Teaching practices to support access, inclusion, and improved learning outcomes for all;  ·         Assessment processes to become more effective and efficient; ·         Administration processes to reduce the burden of ‘non-teaching’ tasks. Rolled out nationwide, the competition is open to entrants who just have an idea, those who may be in full/part-time work, those who have already started their own business, and early-stage startups that are sole traders, a limited company or a partnership with no external equity-based finance. The shortlist will be announced on Friday 22nd March, finalists on Friday 26th April and The People’s Choice Award on Friday 10th May when voting on this category closes. The winners will be announced on Friday 17th May. Commenting on the competition, philanthropist and Founder of Cool Initiatives Jon Thornes MBE said: “Many schools have told us that they’re crying out for better edtech solutions to help them spend less time preparing, monitoring, assessing and accounting, and more time teaching. “We’re seeking to support, develop and invest in ideas or edtech startups that will help schools and teachers to operate more efficiently and effectively.” To enter the edtech challenge please click on the link here.
