Two hundred lucky school children will get a chance to see international masters in action at the ITF European Taekwon-Do Championships 2017, taking place at the Echo Arena between 26th- 30th April 2017.
ITF England Taekwon-Do and the Council have been collaborating with Liverpool schools for the past couple of months, as part of the drive to get Liverpool active with its “Fit for Me " initiative, which aims to improve the health of Liverpudlians of all ages and inspire them to become active. Taekwon-Do instructors have been visiting schools on a weekly basis and giving lessons to pupils of all age groups.
ITF Teakwon-Do England have now offered 200 free tickets to the city Council to share with the schools who have been taking part in the programme. The children of Liverpool will also be playing a starring role in the opening ceremony on 26th April, where they will parade each country’s flag to the sound of the Beatles greatest hits. More than 1,500 athletes from 31 countries will be gathering in Liverpool to compete in the games.
Wendy Simon, Assistant Mayor and Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Events said: “It’s an honour to accept these tickets on behalf of the City of Liverpool, so that as many young people as possible can enjoy and participate in this prestigious event coming to our city. I met some of the competing athletes and was impressed at the international standard and achievements that will be on display.
“Liverpool is increasingly becoming a focal point for international sporting events, in a distinctive city with an excellent sporting heritage, hence our bid for the Commonwealth Games. This event will be just the latest inspiration for children from the city to see what can be achieved on the world stage.”
Taekwon-Do is particularly favoured by parents, as its benefits are both physical and mental.
Wayne Brown, President of ITF England, said: “Apart from the physical activity which all children need, Taekwon-Do has the added benefits of teaching the importance of respect for themselves and for others, the importance of trust and communication and the value of honesty, good manners, loyalty and collaboration.”
Daniel Martin, the PE teacher at SFX Catholic College said: “Taekwon-Do offers a new and exciting opportunity for our pupils, that not only encourages participation in sporting activity but also helps instil respect, honesty and determination.”
