On Thursday last week, local MP Bim Afolami donned his old school PE kit and got involved in an Action Mats PE session at Pirton Primary School.

The session was set up by Shefford based Action Mats to highlight how small schools are making the most of their government Sports Premium.  The session was filmed and featured on Thursday evening’s ITV Anglia News as part of their Healthy Autumn series.

Action Mats believe a healthy lifestyle for all kids should be high on the agenda for all schools; and work with a number of schools internationally, to offer them a PE session in a box solution, so that busy teachers can easily deliver PE sessions which are motivating and fun for the kids and ensure they enjoy keeping fit and healthy.

Bim Afolami, who is a firm supporter of the work schools are doing to encourage a healthier lifestyle, and supports increased funding for schools, comments, ‘I am passionate about children’s health and welfare and see the Government’s childhood obesity strategy as being front and centre of the drive to get kids active. I was delighted to join the children at Pirton School in an Action Mats PE session’

As children have now returned to school after a very warm summer, teachers obviously concentrate on classroom teaching, but also need to keeping kids fit and active throughout the winter months.  This can be a challenge, but one local company Action Mats, based in Shefford, offers a solution for schools with activity mats which can be used anywhere, helping not just with sports but also with learning maths and other topics through actions.  Pirton School is one such school, using their Sports Premium to invest in these mats and have seen great benefit to the children as a result.

The Head of Pirton School, Sonia Fenner, comments, “Physical and emotional wellbeing are a huge part of our Local MP Bim Afolami gets into Action at Pirton Primary School in Rural Hertfordshirelearning environment. We have recently had our achievements in raising the profile of Sports recognised with a Sports Games Mark. That’s why we’ve found Action Mats to be a great new resource and are pleased to share this interest and enthusiasm with our local MP.”

Jonathan Bhowmick from Action Mats comments,

“I am delighted to see that we have created a product that is both wholesome and fun; it’s a winning combination. Our aim was to engage children in PE which of course keeps them fit, happy and healthy.”
