Despite the UK’s evolving employment and commercial landscape, it has become readily apparent that we are now facing a ‘skills deficit’ in the provision of Modern Foreign Languages within schools.

The British Council’s Language Trends Survey 2016/2017 has revealed that since 2012, schools have faced shortfalls in pupils studying a second language, with a 37% reduction at GCSE level.

This shortfall has emerged due a combination of factors; from disparities in the engagement and quality of MFL provision at Key Stage 2, to deficits in language teachers and the CPD opportunities which enable them to deliver effective MFL interventions.

In order for the UK to create a skilled and commercially sustainable workforce which remains at the forefront of opportunity, schools themselves must be at the forefront of enhancing MFL provision and uptake by supporting pupils to effectively transition from KS2 to KS3, increasing pupil engagement through innovative teaching and also by delivering interventions which drive pupil attainment across MFL.

In response to this, on the 18th of October we will be bringing together a host of MFL and school leaders to share strategies for raising attainment and engagement across MFL subjects. With the Department for Education and AQA leading in discussions, this year’s Modern Foreign Languages Conference  will serve as an invaluable opportunity to learn how to prepare pupils for the reformed GCSE and A-level specifications, whilst evaluating innovative teaching solutions which improve the skills of all MFL pupils.

Taking place in Central London, join us to participate in workshops and best practice sessions in order to develop strategies which can increase uptake in MFL subjects, whilst gaining vital training opportunities on how to deliver outstanding MFL provision.
